No other piece of workplace furniture evokes stronger physical and emotional attachments than the office chair. As the Wall Street Journal columnist Sue Shellenbarger reported in her Work & Family column of September 21, 2011, most office workers spend more time in it (their office chair) than any other piece of furniture except their bed.
But here’s the deal, the conversation is focused on the wrong piece of equipment. In reality, we don’t want people to sit. Read my blog entitled “We Sit Way Too Much”. The unhealthiest thing we do every day is sit and we’ve spent millions of dollars attempting to make people more comfortable so they can do something that is not good for them. We want people to move (or stand) because when they do they are healthier, more productive, and yes – think better. And for those that say they don’t think better standing….it’s called lazy!
Office chairs are not going away. I sit in a Herman Miller Aeron chair when not standing and frankly l like it. Nevertheless, the Aeron chair is not making me any healthier….my Sit/Stand desk is.
